It sets out to give an overview of the whole of human history, briefly going over our biological evolution, and then covering in some detail our cultural evolution.
The next chapter deals with the transition from a nomad culture, tracking the paths of animal herds, to one of agriculture.
With a book like this one I like to read and give thought and analysis what I have read. It does a good job of telling the story of how we got here, but doesn’t really want to address the “why” question, despite exuding a boundless optimism that the direction we’re going is “right”. Follow James Burke through the history of science and technology in this collection of 10 1-hour episodes, starting with “The Trigger Effect. Indeed, the most poignant movement in “The Ascent of Man” is when Bronowski visits a former concentration camp where many of relatives were done to death.
I give the book 4 stars because at some moments you realise maj the book was not really written as a book but as material for the TV series. And boy, what an inspiration it is.
